Our Company History

The idea to establish Artist Brushstrokes, LLC in 2005 stemmed from a long term desire to continue  a journey that the Pierre family started about 27 years prior, in the heart of the manufacturing district in the beautiful Caribbean island of Haiti.  In the late 1970s, Laurent Pierre, Sr. who at the time worked for US based brush manufacturing company Robert Simmons, Inc., in Manhattan, New York, was asked to relocate to Haiti and establish a manufacturing facility to expand production capabilities for both their artist and cosmetic brush lines.  At the time, both the Robert Simmons artist and craft brushes and the popular Joan Simmons cosmetic brush line were thriving in the United States.  The Simmons artist brushes were found in craft and hobby stores across the United States and the Joan Simmons cosmetic brush line could be found in stores such as Nordstrom.

The goal of the manufacturing plant was to train and educate the local workers in the art of brush making, with the highest level of quality from start to finish.  Over a 15 year period, this goal was achieved with great success.  It was during the following 15 years that our founder, Laurent Pierre, Jr., developed a love for brush manufacturing and the brush industry business itself. 

At an early age, he involved himself with many aspects of the brush manufacturing process.  After school, he enjoyed working with the floor supervisors and skilled brush makers in selecting and preparing the raw brush material for a production run.  He learned how spot defective batches of brush hairs from excellent cuts of hair, the proper handling of the ferrules, how much hair to place in various brush cup holders and finally the art of brush making.  When the final product was finished, he worked with the shipping department to prepare the package for safe transport to New York for retail distribution.

As Laurent became older, his parents involved him more in the operation side of the business.  During the summers he helped his parents in areas such as general management, accounting, inventory control, packaging, shipping/receiving, distribution, and most importantly the level of consistent quality needed to keep customers loyal.

By the early 1990s, the political and economic situation in Haiti significantly impacted the manufacturing sector in the country and a decision was made to end operations.  In 1994, Robert Simmons, Inc., was purchased by Daler-Rowney and the Robert Simmons artist brush line still exists on the market today.

The Pierre's quickly identified and formed a joint venture with a German company by the name of Elco Pinsel, GmbH.  For many years following, a new brush manufacturing facility was established and successfully  produced artist brushes for distribution throughout Europe.  By the mid-1990s, the newly formed venture continued with local business partners and Laurent's parents relocated back to Long Island, New York, and Laurent went on to pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in Washington, DC.

After a 10 year career detour into the information technology and financial management arena, our founder was introduced to the FM Brush Company, Inc., a fourth generation brush manufacturing company with a rich 80 year history of producing an extraordinary level of high quality artist, craft & cosmetic brushes with global name recognition.  In 2005, Artist Brushstrokes, LLC was founded to pick up where we left off, except this time we would be on he sales and distribution side of the brush business.

In researching the artist & cosmetic brush market in the US, we identified a need to competitively provide the highest quality selections of premium quality, fine artist, craft, hobby and cosmetic brushes under one domain.  It was no secret that over the years the market became flooded with imported brushes that were of lesser quality.  Our goal was to create something unique in exclusively selling what we believe are the best quality brushes on the market.

Today, Artistbrushstrokes.com has proudly served over 2,500 customers globally and we have earned the trust of customers on literally every continent around the world.  The skills developed over the many years working with his parents, coupled with the experience gained in information technology and finance have prepared our founder to lead Artistbrushstrokes.com in becoming the most trusted global online source for the Dynasty, Black Gold and Beauty Strokes brands.
